Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Rain or shine! We will meet on the deck of the Livermore Pavilion to keep our paper dry.
Is there a winter wonderland yet at Marin Art & Garden Center? Are you curious about beauty in things left understated by season’s peak? Come find out as we take a deep dive into nature by writing haiku! Nature is that place Einstein revered for its capacity to “find the answer to everything”. Might we ask how the great outdoors will inform our distillations?
Traditionally, haiku has rules of form. But since becoming an international art, now allows straying from tradition to write liberated haiku – beyond syllable counting… It still takes place in the physical world where we will actually see, hear and smell—using all of our senses to reference this natural setting.
So, we shall brave the elements (save the cozy ambiance of an outdoor fireplace) and excite our vocabulary by writing together. After all the great Basho said, “to know the pine, go to the pine.”
This simple process can turn any ordinary day into its rightful miracle by using “a writer’s eye” perspective. Haiku writing offers many benefits such as relief from mental chatter, heightened focus and rich appreciation for the present moment.
In the spirit of a soiree, your host, Jayne McPherson, will creatively inspire you to slow down, and fully engage your senses while taking notes. This event has a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 22 and welcomes children under 14 when accompanied by an adult. Please bundle up in warm things, bring pen and paper or your preferred writing supplies.
