The winter holidays are fast approaching! Don’t let the stresses of shopping get you down this year; gift your loved ones the one thing that makes everyone happy: food! From artisan cheeses and local wines to tart chocolates and sweet breads, there’s something for every taste and temperament in Marin County. Here are five gourmet gifts to treat your friends to this winter

Artisan Cheese

Cowgirl Creamery makes award-winning cheeses in-house and the results are, well, delicious. There are several cheeses to choose from, with their Mt. Tam being their biggest seller. It’s named for the Northern California landmark of the same name and made from Straus Family Creamery’s fresh organic milk. As for the flavor, think cultured butter with hints of white mushroom. Their winter seasonal cheese, Devil’s Gulch, is another must-try, with its sweet spice flavor.

A Bottle of Vino

When it comes to great-tasting wines, Marin County couldn’t be in a better spot. With Napa and Sonoma within a short drive from most hotels, you have no shortage of varietals. That said, Marin has wineries, too. Trek Winery in downtown Novato has become a local hangout thanks to live entertainment and affordable wines. This holiday season, gift your loved ones a bottle of their best. Trek specializes in both reds and whites, including a 2010 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2012 Carneros Chardonnay.

Gourmet Chocolate

The holidays are all about indulging with those you love, and we can’t think of a better gift than chocolate. Sign up (or gift) your bestie with Walk Marin’s Chocolate Tour. The tour is interactive and immersive, with stops in several of Marin’s small towns. You’ll pass some of Marin’s most stunning scenery, too, like cafes nestled among the redwoods. Marin never gets too cold in the winter, but that’s no excuse not to warm up with an afternoon chocolate espresso. This one is perfect for the foodie in your life.

Artful Tea

Not a coffee drinker? Get hooked on tea instead. Desta Art and Tea Gallery in San Anselmo is a local company with international reach. They source organic and biodynamic teas from across the globe, from India to Argentina. After eating, drinking and being merry during the holidays, a tea-drinking habit is exactly the New Year’s resolution you and your loved ones need. Choose among eight different teas, from classics like black tea and green tea to lesser-known teas like rooibos and oolong. Throw in a tetsubin teapot to sweeten the deal.

Local Flavors

Can’t decide between cheese, chocolate and bread? Luckily, you won’t have to. Why not invite someone special to one of West Marin Food and Farms Tours’ five-hour Flavors of West Marin tours Thursdays through Sundays. You’ll learn about local history as you literally eat your way through Marin. Sample raw and BBQ oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company, sip on a chai latte at Bovine Bakery and master the art of breadmaking at Brickmaiden Breads.
