Barrels of Fun: Discovering Marin's new wine and mead-making scene
Marin has very modest wine-producing production when compared to neighboring Napa and Sonoma counties. But the lack of quantity is made up by Marin vintners' uniqueness and quality. We highlight two local producers of fine fermented drinks, whose tasting rooms make a wonderful excuse for a holiday excursion.
Trek Winery is a family-owned winery and tasting room in downtown Novato that doubles as a live music entertainment venue. Trek began as a family owned and operated winery in 2007 and opened its tasting room just over a year ago. You can buy wine by the tasting, glass, bottle, and case. For $5, you can taste five of their award-winning wines, including reds, whites, or a mix of both. Better yet, each tasting fee is waived when you buy a bottle. Trek is located at 1026 Machin Avenue in Novato.
West Marin's Heidrun Meadery makes a highly unusual—and extraordinary—sparkling honey mead. Using the traditional French Méthode Champenoise, they create and bottle ethereal batches of varietal meads that they describe as "light, dry, delicate and refreshing, with subtle exotic aromas and flavors found only in the essence of honey." Heidrun is located just northwest of downtown Point Reyes Station at 11925 State Route 1.
