The charm and character of Marin’s unique cities are reflected in its many neighborhood shopping districts.  Each community in Marin offers shoppers something unique for every taste and wish.  Located within the communities of Marin are boutiques, antique stores, fine arts and one-of-a-kind crafts, handmade gifts, and home furnishings.  Art galleries are scattered throughout Marin, many of them filled with the work of local artists.

In addition to the local community shops, Marin also hosts regional and nationally-known retailers, located in a number of shopping centers throughout the county.  From Vintage Oaks at Novato to Northgate Mall in San Rafael, to the beautiful high-end outdoor shopping destinations in Corte Madera to the many retail plazas strategically placed throughout Mill Valley and Larkspur, and all the way up through San Anselmo and Fairfax.  But let’s not forgot the organic finds and eclectic shops scattered through the hills of West Marin / Point Reyes.

Art Works Downtown owns and maintains a premier nonprofit art center in a 40,000 sq.ft historic building in the heart of downtown San Rafael on Fourth St. Featuring 3 galleries, 35+ studios with artists at work, a jewelers guild, crafts guild, frame store, ceramic center, clothing boutique and more, AWD also offers rotating exhibits by Bay Area artists, monthly events, art classes for all ages, a public art program as well as other opportunities for artists and community to connect. Open to the public through multiple storefronts, hours are Tuesday - Saturday from 10am-5pm and until 8pm on the 2nd Friday of every month for 2nd Fridays Art Walk.

Marin County has an array of shopping centers - each filled with their own interesting mix of stores.  Our shopping centers are destinations within themselves, as they all include major anchors, dining options, and many provied a variety of activities for people of all ages.  Many of them are open-air centers, which makes them pet friendly.  Make sure to check with a specific retailer before taking your pet, as not all merchants permit furry friends!

Bon Air Center was built in 1952 as Greenbrae’s commercial and community center, and today remains the focal point for local services and shopping with over 50 stores and restaurants. From its commanding location along Highway 101 in San Rafael – the county’s oldest and largest city – Northgate has been a part of the local landscape for 45 years.  Situated 16 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Northgate today features an anchor lineup led by Macy’s, Kohl's, Sears, a 15-screen Century Theatres multiplex, specialty stores, services and restaurants, as well as a popular food court. This broad-based mix makes Northgate the largest, enclosed family oriented shopping destination in Marin County. 

Hours of Operation are Monday – Saturday 10:00am to 9:00pm and Sunday 11:00am to 6:00pm.  Restaurant and Department Store hours may vary. Northgate’s newly-completed, dramatic renovation has transformed the shopping center into a fresh, modern environment suited to the preferences of the sophisticated community.  The new Northgate features an exciting new interior and exterior design, an outdoor plaza with new restaurants and cafes, an indoor/outdoor food court near Century Theatres, a new grand entrance off Del Presidio, a new landscaped pedestrian and bike pathway around the property, and new retail and dining choices geared towards the interests of Marin County residents.
