Just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 1 grows an ancient coast redwood forest named Muir Woods. Within this isolated forest, visitors from all over the world continue to marvel at 1000 year old giant redwood trees that tower 260 feet high. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods a national monument. The forest was named for conservationist John Muir.

Visitors can stroll along the forest floor on marked paths viewing interpretive displays in this magnificent, natural setting. Hiking trails wind through the forest, but no dogs, bicycles, picnics or camping are permitted. Bird watching, nature walks and interpretive programs are part of the activities within Muir Woods. The park is open from 8:00am to sunset, daily including holidays. The Muir Woods Café and Gift Shop are open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, September through May and from 9:00am to 6:00pm, June through August.

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

All vehicles and shuttle passengers arriving at Muir Woods will be subject to the reservation system. Visitors arriving by commercial carrier – or on foot or bicycle – will not be required to use the reservation system or pay fees associated with it.

Parking and shuttle reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance online at GoMuirWoods.com or by calling 1-800-410-2419. A portion of reservations will be released five days before they can be used to give locals and last-minute planners the opportunity to visit. Visitors will have the option to reserve either a vehicle parking space for $9.00 per car or a seat on the shuttle for $3.50 per adult (16 years and older). A vehicle or shuttle reservation provides the visitor with a timed arrival with no restriction on the length of stay for the remainder of the day. Visitors age 16 or older are required to pay a $15 park admission entrance fee in addition to any parking or shuttle reservation fees.

 The weekend shuttle can be boarded at the Pohono Park & Ride lot, 100 Shoreline Highway near Sausalito.
